Pensacola Diverse History
Before Europeans arrived in Florida, Muskogean-speaking peoples lived in the Pensacola area. They traded with the Creek people, who also lived in southern Alabama, Mississippi, and southeast Louisiana. In 1559, Spanish explorer Tristan de Luna founded a short-lived settlement in the area, and in 1698 the presidio established the modern city.
